Our last day in Asheville started with a great brunch downtown at TUPELO HONEY CAFE. Because we were in town on a slow Wednesday morning, we were able to snag a cozy table outside. We ordered the Eggs Betty and Southern Fried Chicken Saltimbocca with Country Ham and Mushroom Marsala Sauce; both were excellent. My… Continue reading TUPELO HONEY CAFE / Asheville, NC

I’ve heard about GUGLHUPF for a while but haven’t had a chance to stop by myself until this year’s trip to Durham. The restaurant was much larger than it looked from the outside; plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I opted for the half sandwich and salad combo– grilled ham and cheese and house salad.… Continue reading GUGLHUPF BAKERY, PÂTISSERIE & CAFE, Durham, NC

RUE CLER, Durham, NC

RUE CLER is a restaurant, bakery and cafe located in Downtown Durham. Rue Cler’s owners–John Vandergrift and Chris Stinnett–also own Pop’s Restaurant in the Brightleaf Square/Peabody Place district. We stopped by for lunch and I was really excited to sample a French-style sandwich. We started with the onion soup and followed that up with Moules… Continue reading RUE CLER, Durham, NC

OX & RABBIT Soda and Sundries (Durham, NC)

The majority of the space at OX & RABBIT is dedicated to good, e.g. stationery, t-shirts, gifts. But, they kept the original soda fountain and are well known for their milkshakes (in recyclable cups made from corn). I loved the hip, graphics-driven vibe throughout the store. Each item seems to be chosen with a keen… Continue reading OX & RABBIT Soda and Sundries (Durham, NC)

If you’re looking for unique knick knacks, gifts or just want to have some fun — head over to VAGUELY REMINISCENT on 9th St. Our favorites of the day included a cookie-shaped change purse, leather applique wallets, bone rings, felt clutches and socks galore. We especially liked the finger-shaped hooks (also available for purchase) throughout… Continue reading VAGUELY REMINISCENT (Durham, NC)

The Durham Farmers Market is a great Saturday tradition. Fabulous local produce + crafts annex + locally made snacks/treats = love, love. If you’re in to fabulous baked treats,  be sure to check out Scratch. Local artisan baker, Phoebe Lawless, is best known for sweet and savory pies but she also makes coffee cakes, muffins… Continue reading DURHAM FARMERS MARKET (Durham, NC)

Yesterday, we went to FOSTER’S MARKET for lunch. Opened in 1990 by one of Martha Stewart’s BFFs, Sara Foster, this Durham institution is always packed. Luckily, we went early and escaped the mad rush of ravenous Carolinians. The Cubano (pulled mojo pork, ham, Swiss, pickles, lettuce, mayo and mustard on pressed Italian bread) was delicious… Continue reading FOSTER’S MARKET (Durham, NC)

Went and grabbed lunch at Amy Tornquist’s WATTS GROCERY restaurant. This local favorite is known for seasonal cooking with local ingredients. I tried the cheesesteak made with (local) shaved ribeye and chili cheese fries. YUM. (Independent Weekly named Watts Grocery “Best New Restaurant in Durham”, 2008.) WATTS GROCERY 1116 Broad St Durham, NC 27705 (919)… Continue reading WATTS GROCERY (Durham, NC)
