Last year, I spotted the SCRATCH table at the Durham Farmers’ Market but didn’t get a chance to sample the much-lauded fare. Then I heard that chef/owner Phoebe Lawless opened up a brick-and-mortar shop in Downtown Durham. It was no surprise these tasty sweet and savory treats would have lots of fans. They recently made the “Ten Best Places for Pie” in October’s Bon Appetit issue! This year, Scratch was firmly cemented on my list of must-dos.
Located on Orange Street, the bright space has indoor and outdoor seating. I especially liked the bright teal tables and an exposed brick wall– done by the talented Philip Hansell of Hansell Painting. We ordered a donut muffin, a savory empanada with poblano peppers and a frittata with fingerling potatoes. All perfect for a savory lover like me.
My only outstanding wish is that I think the savory items would have been fabulous heated. Maybe next year.
