RUE CLER, Durham, NC

RUE CLER is a restaurant, bakery and cafe located in Downtown Durham. Rue Cler’s owners–John Vandergrift and Chris Stinnett–also own Pop’s Restaurant in the Brightleaf Square/Peabody Place district. We stopped by for lunch and I was really excited to sample a French-style sandwich.

We started with the onion soup and followed that up with Moules Frites (mussels steamed in white wine, shallots, and lemon with pommes frites) and the Croque-Monsieur. The soup was great– just the right amount of bread and cheese for my taste. And, the mussels were really fabulous. The Croque-Monsieur was disappointing. Either my sandwich sat too long and the cheese congealed or it wasn’t heated enough to begin with (see photo).

All in all, I imagine that if I lived in Durham I might frequent Rue Cler. Here’s to hoping the sandwich was a one-time experience and that normally they do better.
