CAUSEWAY BAY / San Mateo, CA

I had heard that two dim sum restaurants had opened in Downtown San Mateo since the last time I had been in town so we headed down there on Sunday morning. Expectedly crowded, we waited 30 minutes for our table for three. CAUSEWAY BAY doesn’t utilize the standard push-cart system. Instead, diners mark items on a menu that you hand in to your server. There are pros and cons to this. If you’re pretty familiar with dim sum fare, you don’t have to wait for your favorite cart to roll by. But, for some of my less dim-sum-savvy friends– seeing the items on carts is part of the experience. And, with no photos on the menu it would have been tough for them to order accurately.

The food itself was pretty good. Loved, loved the e-mein noodles with crabmeat and mushrooms. And, the meal was really affordable. We ordered a TON of food for less than $70. That’s never happened to me in Los Angeles, so I was pleasantly surprised. I’m sure I’ll be back. Also looking forward to trying the very popular competition– Champagne — across the street.
