Back in Style
August 11, 2011

When I was a little girl, my favorite accessory was a Coach purse that my mother no longer used. A bit battered, I carried (and often dragged) my purse along with me everywhere shoving inside as many dolls, drawings, crayons and must-have-accessories as I could fit. For sentimental reasons, I held on to the purse for decades but only started using it again a couple years ago. In search of the perfect everyday bag, I realized I was looking for something exactly like the one I had stored in my closet all this time. The size and adjustable strap are exactly what I need and after a couple sessions with mink oil, I was able to buff most of the bigger scratches out. The ones that remain, along with a pen mark on the back that’s been there for almost thirty years, remind me how long this bag has been a part of my life. Recently, a friend asked me, “Is that a Coach bag?”, their face a mix of surprise and slight disapproval. I suppose to some Coach has fallen out of favor in recent years. And while the metallics and logo-embossed styles aren’t my thing the classic styles will always define classic, American style. “Yes! It was my mom’s!” I enthusiastically replied. “Had this since I was a kid. It’s a classic. I’m bringing it back in style.”

Apparently, someone at Coach thought the exact same thing. The Stewardess Bag is one of the five limited edition reissues now available. It was heartwarming to see my beloved bag back after all these time. But, for me, there’s nothing like an original.
